Signs of Major Depression
When she turned 30, she believed she'd dealt with all of her major issues. Her marriage was a little tricky in the beginning but now things were really starting to even out. Her career was great and her kids were growing up to be strong, healthy and happy. However something didn't feel right.
She almost always felt very tired. Her alarm clock went off too early in the morning, no matter how much she slept. She had a very poor appetite and she was drinking more than she ever had.
She had started to let herself go in the past few months even tho she was usually a very fashion conscious dresser. She'd also gained some extra pounds and she didn't have the energy to get a haircut. It was like she was walking thru wet concrete and nothing was fun anymore, just hard.
One afternoon, she got into an argument with her husband. She was headed to the spa - a treat in an attempt to pull herself out of the seemingly constant mental fog she'd been feeling. Her husband asked her, innocently, when she would be back home, since he had a hectic day ahead. She quickly got angry at his question and ended up crying and sobbing uncontrollably. She ended up canceling her appointment and spending the rest of the day in bed.
Things were fine for a few days and another disagreement happened. Once more over a small thing which usually wouldn't bother her. She got so upset, to the point of hysterics, that she started thinking suicide was the answer. That she wasn't good for anything or anybody. That she would be doing her family a favor by ending this problem.
Finally, her husband recognized the danger signs and quickly took her to the hospital where she was admitted for psychiatric evaluation. The resultant diagnosis: Major Depression.
Depression affects millions of otherwise normal people, all over the world. Some people even say that being on anti-depressants is the latest fad. However those with a chemical imbalance, who rely on drugs for their sanity, know that is not true. Anti-depressants can mean the difference between life and death plus hold the key to the unity of many families.
Some wonder why major depression is such a large problem in our society today. It doesn't take much thinking to realize that life today is not what it used to be. Some of the problems of today weren't even around 10 years ago. It's kind of crazy.
Chemical imbalances of the brain are a large role in the onset of major depression. It's still not talked about as readily as a more physical disease, depression bothers many, seemingly successful, outgoing people. It is not the just the problem of the weak or elderly or of the severely abused. Major depression has gone mainstream in a big way.
There is hope. The medical community and drug companies have been successful in treating major depression. But, even treatment with anti-depressant drugs and counseling, depression may still appear now and then. While other people may be cured of their depression forever.
Using the right treatment and therapy depression doesn't have to ruin lives. Other family members understanding is also going to be a big help.
